Boost Billion-Dollar Gemstone Exports

Islamabad: The federal government has decided to introduce a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at regulating and boosting Pakistan’s precious gemstones exports worth billions of dollars.

Under the plan, 610 exporters will be facilitated to participate in international exhibitions over the next five years to expand access to global markets.

Sources say a central authority is being proposed to handle business registration, provincial coordination, and exporter facilitation, with representation from both federal and provincial governments.

The authority will oversee the National Gemstone Policy, establish a National Value Office, and ensure the return of unsold export consignments.

To streamline transactions, exporters will be provided with e-payment gateway facilities, while six dedicated working groups have been formed to promote legal trade.

These groups will focus on banking and financial reforms, refunds for unsold goods, innovation in mining practices, and business registration processes.

Officials estimate that improved registration and traceability will generate over $60 million in value addition, noting that Pakistan possesses gemstones worth over $450 billion, including 200 million carats of rubies and 70 million carats of emeralds, though outdated processing methods currently waste up to 70 percent of the stones.
